Bead Soup 2014 is Served!

My partner, Barb Solem, sent me some great soup to work with. Very industrial chic in nature. I pondered and tried a few ideas before arriving at this result:

I took her amazing metal heart focal and added it to some very heavy gun metal link chain and then added her steel gray wired hook and loop clasp to that. Part one finished. To that I added a chunky, heavy strand that included the soft gray rondelles, the dark gray lava like rounds, interspersing the sparkly spacers…all sent by Barb. I included a strand of BIG Fools Gold nuggets that I got in Tucson years ago and never knew what I’d do with them. Voila! Industrial Chic is complete.

Here’s a few more shots, including matching earrings that used the “spring” connectors that Barb sent.

Dia de los Muertos / Day of the Dead Jewelry Blog Hop Reveal

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and the Southwest. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration takes place on October 31, November 1 and November 2, in connection with the Halloween,  All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. That’s the basics.

Sugar Skulls and marigolds are central to the theme and along with painted faces and decorations, those elements make their way into jewelry. It’s time to reveal what we made for the Halloween/Day of the Dead Jewelry blog hop! sponsored by Suburban Girl Studio.

I’ve got cuffs! Lots of etched cuffs with sugar skulls, marigolds and bright colors.

All of the above were etched and colored by me. Colors are from Color Me This metal patinas.

In addition to the etched versions, I have some amazing glass sugar skulls from Torch by Night Lampwork. One is ring size and the other is cuff size. Both are on interchangeable Sirius System findings from McDuck Creations.

Artisan Whimsey Patina Sunset Challenge

Slipping in under the wire with this challenge on Artisan Whimsey…I’ve been out of town for a short, but much-needed break with my parents in Colorado Springs!

Rita from Toltec Beads reminded me about this challenge and how perfect it would be to take part in with Color Me This patinas…I loved the beauty of heat patinas but I didn’t love the fact that I couldn’t replicate them at all, much less get great results regularly. I’m sure it was something I wasn’t doing, but given the fact that I love colors and also had a need to attempt to replicate some colors on design sheets for other designers, I went the route of working with some of my own blends and cold application patinas that are now on Etsy. More about those another day…

For Melinda Orr’s challenge on Artisan Whimsey, I decided to submit one of my newest creations and part of a series that will grow as the ideas are overflowing (more than the time available to implement them!)

I have been making etched copper and brass cuffs for a couple of years now, selling them on Etsy, Facebook and at shows. I love the etched textures and I love coloring them. One of my favorite patterns is a background of peacock feathers.

This is one of several color variations I’ve come up with. It features Turquoise and Sapphire over Burgundy and Plum (all from the Original set of Color Me This 6-pack). I’ve swirled and layered and sanded and played til I got something that I liked. This particular one not only mimics the colors of peacock feathers, but also has some great sunset colors with the Burgundy and Butterscotch shades. On top of these, I’ve added some  luster with some shimmer dust powders and played some more.  You can find others on my Facebook page. Check out other Patina Sunset Challenge participants

Winner, Winner!!!!

Thanks to all who stopped by to comment on my blog and to shop in my store during the Artisan Whimsey sale! It was a busy week with lots of great sales going on. Stop by the Artisan Whimsey site and look around, too. Lots of great information there.

I’m happy to announce the winner of the $25 gift certificate is Carolyn Collins of Sparkling Waters Studios. Congratulations! Have fun shopping! I’ll be in touch with details.

AND I was pleasantly surprised yesterday to find out that my Bead Soup Blog Party entry for Kalmbach Jewelry Books was chosen as a winner among the office staff! I’ll be receiving a copy of the new Crystal Jewelry Inspiration book in January.

The necklace is on its way to my mother’s for her 81st birthday (along with some matching earrings). She’s been my biggest supporter and fan of my jewelry efforts for years and years. I know she’ll be pleased to know that others loved it too.

Happy Holidays!

Fall into Fall?

I feel like I fell off the map in some ways…August just came and went! It was a mad dash of weeks of preparation for BeadFest in Philly mid-month to launch Color Me This and then I got back and felt like I’d been hit by a Mack truck…not sick, like so many other vendors, but completely and thoroughly exhausted. So you go with it and do what you can.

I’m more or less “back”. BeadFest was great! People seemed really excited about the sample packs and I talked and demonstrated them til I couldn’t talk anymore. My sister, Kelly, came up from northern Virginia to help out and it was a bonus to have sister time.

Here’s a photo of the booth set up.

And a purchase from Kabela Designs that I managed to make before the show started one morning. I’ve already been working on colorizing them and I’m really happy with the results but I’ll save that for another blog.

I’ve been working on filling orders and getting advertising in place in a couple of magazines, plus product reviews (and my “day” job in the mix, too). Never a dull moment. Hard to imagine I haven’t etched anything since mid-August! That changes tomorrow.

Stay tuned for photos of the next two sample packs (they are available on Etsy right now), but I’ll have more photos in a day or so. Here’s a teaser!

Color Me This on it’s Way!

Wow…it’s been a wild couple of weeks…

First things, first. The winner of the free Color Me This sample pack is Melissa Mesara of One-Eared Pig. Congratulations!

I’m headed to Philadelphia tomorrow for BeadFest where I’ll be demonstrating and selling Color Me This Sample Packs and also plain etched sheets (so you can color your own!), plus my new embellished cuffs and some other etched, colorized components. Join me at Booth 555 if you are at the show and say “Hi!”

Color Me This Sample Pack

I’ve got a batch of them listed on Etsy in case you can’t make it to Philly this time. They will ship next week Tuesday or Wednesday when I return home. And later this month I’ll be adding larger sizes of the sample colors that can be purchased singly, as well as some 3-packs. Plus new colors on the way too.

There’s a photo album on my Facebook page where samples of your work will reside. Just post a photo on my wall and I’ll move it to the photo album. I’m excited to see what creative uses you find for the colors. And I’m already getting great feedback about the ease-of-use and results from the initial buyers. Plus, I’ll have feedback about additional sealers that are working for people. That gives some alternatives to my recommendations…people aren’t always able to find PermaLac locally or out of the country.

I mentioned “embellished cuffs” and I’ve been having a blast with them…here’s a couple that I’ve shown on Facebook. They are headed to BeadFest, too. I love the direction they are taking me and can’t wait to continue with them.
